Southwest Wisconsin expansion on tap at Driftless Brewing

Driftless Brewing Company of Soldiers Grove recently was honored for their business development efforts during the Crawford County Leadership Awards on April 25 at Crossing Rivers Health of Prairie du Chien. Driftless Brewing completed its $1.2 million renovation and expansion project in February and the company has more exciting news on the horizon. “We’ve completed our renovation and we’re now focusing on production,” said Driftless Brewing Business Operations Director Cynthia Olmstead. “We’ve signed on with distributor General Beverage. It’s a big step for us.” Olmstead said Driftless Brewing will be distributing in southwest Wisconsin from La Crosse County to the south. They will also continue self distribution in Soldiers Grove. The distribution in southwest Wisconsin will be followed by a gradual expansion east toward Madison and Milwaukee in coming months and years. “It’s a slow progression, but we’re looking for new keg and bottle accounts,” said Olmstead, who noted that Driftless Brewing now has 30 accounts in five counties, including Stark’s Sport Shop and Quality Beverage, both of Prairie du Chien. In fact, Olmstead said businesses intereste...

Augusta cemetery slated for clean-up | Ledger Independent

Since 1996, community-minded citizens have taken part in Park Day events at various sites across the country. Activities are chosen by each participating site and can include building trails, raking leaves, painting signs, putting up fences and contributing to site interpretation. In addition to the satisfaction that volunteer work brings, participants receive official Park Day T-shirts, and may have the chance to hear a local historian describe people and events of the past at their site. Park Day can also be used to fulfill the service requirements associated with scout groups, student organizations, training corps programs, many school systems, and more. Volunteers will meet at Payne Cemetery along Kentucky 8, and spend a few hours doing some basic cleaning of the cemetery, from picking up trash to yard work. If there are enough participants, volunteers will also work on cleaning the sidewalk along Kentucky 8 to allow folks to be able to walk to the cemetery from town. Volunteers should wear work clothes, bring gloves and any yard tools (pruners, flat shovels to clean the sidewalk of dirt buildup, trash bags, etc.). Water and a snack will be provided. Depending on time, volun...

Police: Man crashed into car, 2 guardrails and home during high-speed chase in stolen truck | Crime and Courts

GARY — A 47-year-old man was arrested Friday after he led police on a high-speed chase in a stolen pickup truck, crashing into a parked car, two guardrails and a Hobart home, police said. The owner of the stolen pickup truck, which is used by a tree service, flagged down an officer about 1 p.m. Friday to report he had spotted the truck near 35th Avenue and Broadway in Gary, Cmdr. Jack Hamady said. A Gary officer began checking the area and spotted the pickup in the east alley of 35th and Broadway. As the officer pulled up, the truck’s owner parked alongside him and pointed to the 47-year-old, accusing him of stealing the truck. The officer attempted to stop the 47-year-old as he drove the pickup west on 35th Avenue. When the officer activated his lights and siren, the man accelerated around a vehicle stopped for a traffic light and sped off, police said. The 47-year-old disregarded a stop sign near 50th Avenue and Vermont Street; struck a parked, unoccupied tan Buick head-on; and continued east on 49th Avenue, police said. As the driver attempted to turn north on Liverpool Road in Hobart, he struck a guardrail and damaged a mailbox. The driver continued through a yard, as...

Amazon’s plastic mailers are gumming up recycling operations

Over the past year, Amazon has reduced the portion of shipments it packs in its cardboard boxes in favor of lightweight plastic mailers, which enable the retailing giant to squeeze more packages in delivery trucks and planes. But environmental activists and waste experts say the new plastic sacks, which aren’t recyclable in curbside recycling bins, are having a negative effect. “That Amazon packaging suffers from the same problems as plastic bags, which are not sortable in our recycling system and get caught in the machinery,” said Lisa Sepanski, project manager for King County Solid Waste Division, which oversees recycling in King County, Wash., where Amazon is based. “It takes labor to cut them out. They have to stop the machinery.” The recent holiday season, the busiest for e-commerce, meant ever more shipments — creating a massive hangover of packaging waste. As the platform behind half of all e-commerce transactions in 2018, according to eMarketer, Amazon is by far the biggest shipper and producer of that waste — and a trendsetter, meaning that its switch to plastic mailers could signal a shift across the industry. Other retailers that use sim...

WES Pharma Inc., a Maryland-based specialty pharmaceutical company, manufactures a controlled substance for oral dosage that, until recently, was distributed in 500 mL bottles.WES saw a need in the market to add single-use packaging for the low-viscosity liquid product. “We were originally looking at our options and were planning to outsource the packaging of smaller dosages down to a quantity of 5 mL,” says Rick Ferguson, Director of Manufacturing at WES, which offers research, development, manufacturing and marketing of both OTC and prescription generic products in liquid and solid form. “We went to visit a contract packager where another product was being manufactured and decided that if a machine doesn’t take up much space, it would be ideal to bring packaging in-house,” he says. Floorspace and accuracy were key decision points for WES when they sought a new p...

Despite its age in a class of tools that sees frequent upgrades, the Metabo HPT 12V

Despite its age in a class of tools that sees frequent upgrades, the Metabo HPT 12V Drill is still relevant thanks to its ability to get the job done at an outstanding price. That said, there’s definitely room to improve this line. Moving to a brushless motor and slide pack batteries is all it would take to move it forward. We’ll have to wait and see what Metabo HPT has in mind for their 12V tools as they round out their MultiVolt line.  12V tools are great to have around. For jobs that don’t require all the torque or speed in the world, the lighter weight, smaller voltage drills are quite handy. That’s why we included the 12V drills in our recent Head to Head Cordless Drill Shootout. Today, we’re looking at the Metabo HPT 12V Drill that showed us it’s not ready to throw in the towel just yet.
