Finding the perfect gift for your grandchildren can be tough, and if you’ve got a particularly smart grandchild, it can be even harder. You want to find a present that can help nurture their gifts, but you also want to provide some fun! Luckily, we’ve rounded up a list of gifts that can help you cover both bases. Whether you’re shopping for a promising artist or a future Nobel Prize winner, these gifts are sure to bring some smiles this year.  Making a volcano out of baking soda and vinegar is still a classic science experiment for a reason, but the opportunities to learn about science using items from the kitchen have really exploded in recent years. This kit gives kids over 25 experiments to teach them about physics, biology, and chemistry by doing everything from switching on an LED light with a lemon to creating orange peel candles.  You’ve probably heard that coding is the hot job skill that everyone will want to have in a few years. But how do you learn to code? This kit utilizes Star Wars to make coding fun and easy. Your grandchild will build a sensor that detects 3D hand motions while learning how technology like this works. After the sensor is built, they can use it to...

Sometimes people get the impression that living in Asia, I get to see and experience a lot of technology way before someone who might live in the UK or USA, for example. Unfortunately for me, the reality is very different, certainly in the case of HomeKit or smart home devices in general. While Taiwan has factories that make a lot of the technology we see in these smart devices, in terms of consumers and smart home products, the uptake has been slow. It is picking up though, I’m happy to say, and this is in part due to the proliferation of companies now coming out of the shadow of making stuff for other companies, and releasing products with their own branding. One such company is Greenbank, who have been slowly but surely releasing their HomeKit compatible wired light switches. We were provided one to test out, so we’ll be casting our critical eye over it today. Here we have the 2-gang version of the Greenbank ‘G-Switch’, which is essentially a HomeKit compatible, wired or in-wall light switch, but let’s start with the presentation. I’m going to make short work of the packaging part today, but safe to say, these switches come in a reasonably well-protected box, with a ‘window’ ...

Like chalky sunscreen and limited foundation shades, hair removal lasers didn’t used to work well for

Like chalky sunscreen and limited foundation shades, hair removal lasers didn’t used to work well for women with medium to dark skin. But thanks to the growing awareness around inclusivity, along with advances in technology, those of us who were told for years that laser hair removal was a no-go due to our skin tone are now finally able to get the treatment. First, the lowdown on lasers: They beam intense light at the follicle, causing permanent damage so hair no longer grows. But because they work by targeting the pigment in the hair—it’s the contrast between darkness in the hair and lighter skin that helps the laser focus on its bullseye—the ideal candidate has traditionally been someone with fair skin and dark hair. For women of color, laser hair removal has been a gamble: devices weren’t sophisticated enough to completely distinguish between the pigment in the skin and the hair, meaning that they could potentially cause dark and light spots, blisters, and even scarring, in the skin surrounding the follicle, says Robyn Gmyrek, M.D., dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology. But now there are smarter lasers that can be used in a much more precise—and safe—wa...

Don’t blame synthetic diamonds for the natural industry’s woes

• From a technical perspective, both CVD and HPHT synthetic diamonds have qualities that make them attractive • Synthetic diamonds offer benefits to cutters and retailers – but consumers prefer natural diamonds for engagements and anniversaries Most diamond cutters (they liked to be called manufacturers, but now ‘manufacturers’ refers to growers of synthetics) require bank finance for their rough diamond buying. For far too long, Indian companies have been hooked on government-subsidised interest rates to promote skilled export-oriented employment. This has led to ‘round-robin IMPEX’: import a parcel of rough, get a low interest loan, smuggle the goods out of the country, re-import the parcel, get a new loan, and repeat over and over. It’s commonly believed that much of the money sourced this way has funded Mumbai property developments. Finally, after 20 years, the government and banks are clamping down. In Antwerp, ABN Amro – a major lender to the rough diamond sector – has scaled back its financing. Firstly, they can stop buying very expensive high colour and clarity large natural rough diamonds because, as the Rapaport price graph shows, other companies are dumping theirs. Se...

Gearlab Launches Revolutionary New Deck Pod and Full Line of Kayak Accessories

DENVER & TAIPEI, Taiwan, July 29, 2019 /PRNewswire/ – In August, Gearlab Outdoors will launch a revolutionary new deck bag called the “Deck Pod,” which promises to be a game-changer for kayakers and stand-up paddle boarders alike. Medallion steps into developing at 260 High Park condos | RENX

Toronto’s Medallion Capital Group is the developer of the 260 High Park Church Lofts & Residences. (Courtesy Medallion) In the big picture of Toronto developments, Medallion Capital Group‘s 260 High Park Church Lofts & Residences is not a large project. However, for Medallion it is a major step as the firm moves from being a management partner to direct involvement in the development. Medallion has now broken ground at 260 High Park, which re-envisions the former Alhambra Church on the southwest corner of Annette Street and High Park Avenue in Toronto’s West End. “We’ve been associated with other projects, but on the condominium development side it’s been in more of a management role,” Medallion co-founder and president Chris Giamou told RENX. “260 High Park is our first project that we’ve taken it from inception to close. The project features 15 lofts ranging from 837 to 3,081 square feet in the repurposed church, and 55 additional suites from 632 to 2,567 square feet in a new four-storey condo surrounding it. The layouts are: one bedroom; one bedroom plus den; two bedroom; two bedroom plus den; and three bedroom plus den. Prices range from $1 million to under $4 milli...

Jim Cramer’s ‘Mad Money’ recap & stock picks Dec. 4, 2019

CNBC’s Jim Cramer breaks down Wednesday’s market rotation and reveals where retail investors can shop for stocks. The “Mad Money” host sits down with the CEO of Mattel. Later in the show, he gets insight into how the mobile stock app Robinhood managed to grow its user base past 10 million from the company’s co-founders. CNBC’s on Wednesday advised that investors wait some days before buying stocks that have lost their luster in the market. The big fund investors, who influence stock trajectories, are rotating their holdings away from fast-growing companies with slim profits into equities that pay higher dividends, the “Mad Money” host revealed to viewers. “These fashion rotations … don’t turn in a day, so wait a little longer and then pick your favorite digitization” plays, Cramer said in comparing investor appetites to fashion trends. “It’s better to catch them on the way down, not chase them on the way up. Let them come to you; fortunately, that’s exactly what they’re doing.” The future of American toymaker Mattel involves a lot more than just selling toys, the company’s...

Ballas replaces Keillor as owner of bookstore, renames ‘Next Chapter’

The bookstore formerly known as Common Good Books officially turned a new page on April 1 when new owner, Nick Ballas, took over management and began the store’s “Next Chapter.” The change comes after former owner Garrison Keillor decided to sell the bookstore at the beginning of 2019. “We’re largely the same,” store manager David Enyeart said. “Same layout, same staff, same books, but a little bit different,” In addition to the change in name, the store has a fresh coat of paint, new signage and, according to Enyeart, “fresh energy.” Common Good Books had been operating on the corner of Grand and Snelling since 2012 and had been in business since 2006. According to Enyeart, when allegations of sexual misconduct against Keillor surfaced in 2017, the store’s sales suffered significantly. Enyeart says that with Next Chapter, he and Ballas are interested in increasing efforts to engage with the local community. “We’ll certainly return to doing more events, and that sort of thing,” Enyeart said. “Nick is very interested in the community aspect of the store, so we’re going to redouble our efforts on that sort of thing. I’m especially interested in book clubs and other events where we...
